Former Air Force and Intelligence Analyst Enters GOP Primary Race for Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District; Amal Torres vows to stand united with the people of Maryland and work to create a better future for her district and country.
Baltimore, MD –Former U.S. Air Force and career intelligence Analyst Amal Torres has entered the GOP primary for Maryland’s third congressional district, currently held by seven-term Democrat John Sarbanes.
Torres, 30, emigrated to the U.S. as a child with her mother and siblings who fled war-torn Somalia. A naturalized U.S. citizen, Torres was raised by a single mother who she says, “instilled in her the American values of service and contribution.” “Though we struggled to make ends meet, my mother was profoundly grateful for the opportunities in our new nation and taught me to work hard and never give up,” Torres said.
The first member of her family to attend college, Torres enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at the age of 19, enabling her to pursue her studies. Upon graduation, she served as an Air Force Intelligence Analyst and deployed in support of combat operations at the strategic, operational, and tactical levels.
“America provided me with the opportunity to truly exercise my right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Having come from a nation that tore itself apart over differences, I am committed to supporting and defending the constitutional rights afforded to all U.S. persons, and protecting national interests from all enemies foreign and domestic. Nations don’t just stay united, it takes work. It takes putting the greater good ahead of the party and sacrificing personal will for the common good and preservation of the Union. Unfortunately, John Sarbanes has failed to meet these needs on all fronts.”
“We need a voice in Washington, someone who’ll fight for the people of Maryland, not just an empty suit and rubber stamp for business as usual.”
In her campaign announcement video, Amal says that "in order for us to preserve this great Nation and the beautiful state of Maryland, for generations to come, we must stand United."
